GNKSA Evaluation Form 2.04 Product Name : Apple Cyberdog Product Version : 2.0 Tested on platform : Mac OS 8.1 Available for platforms: Mac OS w/OpenDoc Evaluation date : 4/24/98 Evaluated by : J. B. Moreno Conclusion ========== Apple Cyberdog 2.0 fails to satisfy some basic GNKSA requirement(s), hence does NOT qualify for the Good Net-Keeping Seal of Approval. Summary ======= Pass Fail Total Pass/Fail% MUSTs 23 16 39 59%/41% SHOULDs 12 15 27 44%/56% %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% 59%M %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% 44%S [GNKSA Score-O-Meter] Details ======= Regarding the strict GNKSA requirements (MUSTs), Apple Cyberdog 2.0 FAILS on the following points: 1d Fails to show where to followup to (Followup-To) 1e Does not show where to reply to (Reply-To) 2a Does not provide a clear, separate command for posting a new article 2b There's no clear, separate command for posting a followup article 2c There's no clear, separate command for replying by email 4c Does not allow setting Followup-To: poster 6a Does not handle Followup-To: poster correctly 6b Does not post followups to groups in Followup-To 7b Fails to include the last three references from the original 9c Can both post as well as mail followups by default 10f Fails to supply a proper preceding attribution line 16a Does not warn when posting an empty article 16c Does not warn when posting quoted text only 17 Can encrypt or encode messages into oblivion by default 19a Taxes servers heavily by spuriously opening multiple connections 19b Generates excessive server load Apple Cyberdog 2.0 violates `soft' GNKSA requirements (SHOULDs) in the following way: 2d Fails to use standard terminology 3b Does not warn when posting to a large number of groups 3c Fails to encourage setting a Followup-To on large crossposts 7d Does not keep as many references as possible 9d Mail message not preceded by notification when posted and mailed 10d Does not omit (proper) signatures from quoted text 13a Does not let users cancel their own articles 13b Does not enable users to supersede their own articles 14a May cause posting mangled articles 14b Fails to warn for excessively long lines 14d Does not support rewrapping quoted text correctly 15a Does not use or support standard signature delimiter 15b Does not warn on, or refuse, excessive signatures 16b Does not refuse posting an empty article 16d Does not refuse to post quoted text only Apple Cyberdog 2.0 offers the following nice net-keeping features unmentioned by the GNKSA: Works easily and well with multiple newsservers. Useful for when one server carries a group and another doesn't (such as private nntp servers for customer support). Additional Comments: 1d - Can NOT see Followup-To at all, doesn't obey. It is possible to see full headers, by opening up a different window using option-click. 1e - Can NOT see Reply-To at all (does obey). It is possible to see full headers, by opening up a different window using option-click. 2a - Have to type the group name in the To field as: newsserver/newsgroup. Same command for news and mail. 2bc - One command for followup/reply - default is for that to bring up a dialog which allows you to choose mail or news or both can be overridden to mail/news/both. 3bc - No warning, no limit. 4c - Doesn't warn, doesn't prevent posting to many newsgroups. 6abc - Doesn't obey Followup-To, always uses Newsgroups. 7abcde- Includes id of precursor only. 9d - Includes a header X-Newsgroups when posted and mailed. 10d - Includes text when quoting message. 10f - Can, but doesn't by default. 12c - Uses Internet Config, reads username and address from IC once, at startup. 13cd - Doesn't allow canceling, pass by default. 14ab - Returns must be entered by hand. 15ab - Doesn't use proper "sigs", instead has stationary type docs. Stationaries can contain anything, including a standard sig. 17 - Can encode by default. 19ab - Opens a connection for every article opened simultaneously, and only closes those connections if they are aborted by Cmd-period, or upon quitting Cd. The connections are reused, as long as they haven't been closed by aborting or killed by the server. A copy of this evaluation was sent to the Cyberdog Team.
